The suffering/end of suffering continuum, unlike the form/formless continuum, accesses another important component of our journey, and that is the full embodiment of our humanity. It is easy to slip into a cold, isolated, and untouchable position when working with form and the formless. These words may not invite a full flowering of the heart in the way the continuum of suffering and the end of suffering does. The suffering continuum will not allow a dispassionate coldness to intercede between others and us. Suffering gives access to the heart and closes that distance. Compassion is the response of the heart to struggle, and this is an important reason not to stray too far from the Buddha’s continuum of suffering and its end.
