The second practice using active discernment is contemplation or reflection. It blends an active inquiry with the passive discernment of letting the question be in quietude. In contemplation we simply let something that we are curious about float in stillness while being sustained by interest. Simply let the subject of contemplation, which can be a phrase, word, or image, float in wonderment until there is a revelation, and something new is seen and understood. There is no driving energy and need for resolution behind contemplation as there is in inquiry, there is simply letting the subject rest in the mystery of the unknown and seeing what comes forth. Interest and curiosity drive and motivate contemplation.
