In some of the translations of the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha uses a phrase that encourages us toward stillness. He says, “[The sense that there is a body] is maintained to the extent of [our] knowledge and remembrance.”6 What he is implying is that we need to withhold our “knowledge and remembrance” if our intent is to allow the body to be seen as it is and not the way we conditionally “maintain” it in memory. This means when we enter the body, we release the need to recall each detail from our history and recollection. He is suggesting we explore the body through stillness and not through the mind’s knowledge.
