If we settle back for a moment and ask how we know we exist, we sense a life force in us that is undeniable. We may not know exactly what that something is, but it seems like some felt-sense of aliveness. If we quiet ourselves even further and look deeper within, this sense of existence does not seem tethered to anything in particular. Now what is that sense of aliveness? For the moment, let us just focus on that exclusively and let everything else fall to the background. We know it is there, but we cannot say much about it. It is there when we think and when we are not thinking, when we emote and when we are not emoting. It seems constant but does not seem bound to anything for its continuance. Search as we will, there does not seem to be anyone back there that can claim ownership of this aliveness. There is just the sense of existing. We are now left with an impasse: How can we claim to be someone existing, but when we look we find only existence itself.
