Although it can be useful to think of mindfulness as ‘being with things as they really are’, it is in fact more accurate, and more helpful for our purposes, to understand basic mindfulness practice as a way of looking that merely fabricates a little less than our habitual ways of looking. This is because, in leaving aside stories and papañca, and in paying attention in a closer, simpler, and more continuous way to simpler aspects of experience, it both sees through a certain level of abstraction and fabrication, and does not engage in perceptions and processes of the citta that fabricate quite so much.
